Is a cosmetology career right for you? This question begs asking if you're considering any long-term plans in the cosmetology industry. Training takes a whole lot of effort and time (and, of course, money–cosmetology school isn't free!), so it's imperative that you understand the investment you're making. It would be a shame to complete your cosmetology education and then decide you weren't going to take advantage of your certification and skills!

So how do you know if you would be a successful cosmetologist? Well there are a number of traits you may have that would certainly help you succeed easily, and we'll talk about them here. This is not at all to say that if you don't have these traits you cannot be a successful cosmetologist. But having them would be a plus.

Are you a dedicated person? Prospective cosmetologists should be dedicated to putting in lots of hard (but fun!) work to successfully complete training. But being dedicated to your school work at beauty colleges isn't all. You should be dedicated to your own image as a service employee, meaning in turn that you have to show dedication to your clients.

Are you creative and artistic? Some things cosmetologists do don't require much creativity. But makeup artists and hairstylists in particular should understand that being able to visualize how their client will look before even starting to work on them is very important. Of course, making their clients understand what they will look like is just as important.

Are you a nice person? Or, more accurately, can you pretend to be a nice person? Everybody wants and expects to be respected. Being rude to your teachers, your classmates, your clients or anyone else in the business will greatly hurt your chances of success. So if you can put on a cheery attitude and at the very least pretend to be nice (of course we encourage genuine kindness!) your cosmetology career will go a long way.

Ambition. Anyone pursuing a career in anything should have ambition. But in the cosmetology industry ambition can take your cosmetology career far up the ladder. Would you like to run your own beauty clinic some day? If you're ambitious enough to have that desire, studying and working hard early in your career will pay off in the long run when you might run your very own business!

If you have these characteristics, you should seriously consider a cosmetology career. That's not to say it will be an easy journey; on the contrary, you will have to put in lots of hard work even if you naturally embody those traits. And if you don't have them? That's okay too. Everything depends on your attitude–if you really want to be a cosmetologist, hard work and dedication matter most. Creativity will flow with that dedication.

So is a cosmetology career right for you? If the answer is yes, then start looking into beauty colleges and learn about the ones that interest you. That's the first step to starting your successful cosmetology career!
